About WWI...
WWI, also classified as a 'Total War' started in 1914 and ended in 1919. WWI occurred because of conflicts and factors such as nationalism, militarism, alliances, imperialism and the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinarid of Austria. New Zealand was part of world war one and more than 120,000 New Zealanders contributed, also around 103,000 served overseas. New Zealand thoroughly mobilized all their available resources and population for WWI. The civilians were as much part of the war as the soldiers and there were no differentiation among the two combatants.
New Zealand didn't only go to war to support Mother England but to secure the bond between Britain. At that time New Zealand was very dependent on Britain as their empire size and wealth was extreme and the only way to remain their alliance with Britain was to support them at the war. Therefore New Zealand showed loyalty and in return Britain continued to protect New Zealand.
Economically New Zealand was in a good state to enter a war compared to other countries, which was only possible because of British buying exports such as meat, dairy products and wool for the soldier's uniforms at the war. New Zealand lost heaps but gained it's true identity in WWI.
This link below shows the number of deaths overall in depth.
